Motion Sickness Desensitization Program

Introduction: Motion sickness can be an unfortunate issue the human body might undergo during certain activities; such as riding in the backseat of an automobile, flying as a passenger or as pilot in command of an aircraft, as well as being out on a ship or boat in rough water. When a pilot starts their flight training, the last thing they want to have to worry about is becoming physically ill during the middle of a flight lesson. The motion sickness program intends to expose the affected person to the motion, and learn different ways to adapt in a safe and controlled environment. The profile used for the Motion Sickness program at UND Aerospace uses the same program developed by the United States Air Force for their air crews.

Overview of the program: Student will meet with a flight physiologist and give a brief history regarding the motion sickness they experience. The program will take place over three consecutive days. The first day will be (2) ten-minute sessions (with a break in between). The physiologist has constant communication with the student. Days 2 and 3 will be similar to day one but will have (3) ten-minute sessions with breaks between sessions. Physiologist will provide tools to help with the motion sickness such as providing a fan if needed in our trainer, different breathing techniques to help pass the nausea symptoms as well as other relaxation techniques.
